1st century BC
Iazyges — a powerful nomadic pastoral Sarmatian tribe. Initially, the Iazyges lived east of the Tanais River (modern Don) and were the southern neighbors of the Roxolani. Then they lived between the Dnieper and the Danube. In the 1st century AD, they migrated to the lower Danube, to the territory of Dacia. In the 2nd century AD, they occupied the space between the Danube and Tisa rivers (on the territory of modern Hungary). Neighboring the Dacians. Carried by the Sarmatian movement beyond the Carpathians, the Iazyges fought in 50 AD on the side of the Quadi leader Vannius against the forces of the Hermunduri and Lugii.
In Hungarian historiography, the view is widespread that the Jasz and the Iazyges are two different peoples of Iranian origin. In the Russian tradition, the Jasz and Iazyges were usually identified, and, for example, the region of Jászság received the name Jazygia in the Russian language. The question of the relationship between the Yazamats and the Iazyges has not been resolved, just as the question of the relationship between the Iazyges and the medieval Jasz. A continuation of this unresolved question are versions according to which part of the Iazyges-Metanastae (migrants) migrated back to the east and gave rise to the ancestors of the Jasz. According to another theory, the Jasz represented a part of the Iazyges who remained in the Northern Black Sea region (or in the Caucasus). There are versions that it was they, fleeing from the Mongols, who were settlers in the Middle Danube region, where they were met by the King of Hungary Bela IV and settled in the region of Jászság (Hungarian: Jászság), apparently named after the ethnonym.
