Vallisneria caulescens (lat. Vallisneria caulescens) is a species of aquatic plant from the family Hydrocharitaceae. One of the largest and most impressive Vallisneria species, known for its tall stem and long ribbon-like leaves.
Distribution. The natural range of Vallisneria caulescens covers water bodies of Australia and the Pacific Islands, including Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia. The plant is found in stagnant and slow-flowing waters — rivers, lakes, ponds and canals.
Care requirements. Vallisneria caulescens is a very undemanding and fast-growing plant. Optimal water parameters: temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–8.0, hardness 2–15 dGH. It grows well in moderate lighting but prefers bright light (from 0.5 W/L). CO2 injection is not required but accelerates growth and improves appearance. The plant prefers nutritious substrate but can also grow in sand.
Planting and care. Vallisneria caulescens is planted in the substrate as individual rosettes. It quickly takes root and begins to grow, forming dense thickets. The plant requires regular pruning, as it can grow up to 100 cm tall. With insufficient lighting, leaves become pale and growth slows down. Weekly water changes of 20% and liquid fertilizer application are recommended.
Propagation. Propagates vegetatively — through runners that the mother plant sends out. Young rosettes separate from the mother plant and form new colonies. It can also reproduce by seeds, but this rarely occurs in the aquarium.
Special features and use in aquascaping. Vallisneria caulescens is distinguished by long, ribbon-like leaves that can reach 100 cm in length and 1–2 cm in width. The leaves are bright green with a smooth surface. It looks great in the background, creating a beautiful green backdrop. Suitable for aquariums with large fish. Not recommended for aquariums with herbivorous fish. Ideal for tall aquariums and aquariums with large fish.
