Sauromatians — nomadic tribes related to the Scythians. In the 7th century BC, they lived, possibly, in the Volga and Ural steppes. At the end of the 5th–4th centuries BC, they pushed back the Scythians and crossed the Don. At this time, new tribal unions were formed among them, into which incoming tribes from the east also merged. From the 3rd century BC, all these tribes came to be called Sarmatians. According to the legend transmitted by Herodotus, part of the later Sauromatians arrived from the region of the modern Turkish harbor of Samsun (northern Turkey) by sea to the northern Kuban region and here mixed with the Scythian tribes.

See Sarmatians.
