16th century BC
Mitanni — the people of the state of Mitanni (Hanigalbat in Assyrian texts, Naharina in Egyptian and Semitic texts) — an ancient state (16th-13th centuries BC) in the territory of Northern Mesopotamia and adjacent regions. The population of Mitanni consisted of Hurrians and Semites, with Hurrian and Akkadian as the official languages. The capital of Mitanni — Wasshukanni (Khoshkani) — was located at the source of the Khabur River. It is assumed that this city stood on the site of the modern city of Serekani in Syria. The state of Mitanni established itself on the historical stage in the conditions of a vacuum created as a result of the defeat of the Babylonian Empire by the Hittite-Hurrian alliance in the 16th century BC.
VARIANT NAMES: Assyrian Hanigalbat, Egyptian Naharina.
