- Macrocephali
Macrocephali — literally "big-headed." A Scythian tribe located west of the Colchians, east of Trapezus. They belonged to the tribal union of the Macrones. Ancient authors identified them with the Macrones. Pseudo-Scylax locates them in the immediate vicinity of Trapezus. Xenophon places their territory, extending over a three-day march (10 parasangs, i.e., 59.4 km), in the mountains above Trapezus (Anab. IV, 8, 1-9). By the turn of the era, the Macrones, according to Strabo (XII, 3, 18), already called Sanni, still occupied the mountainous territories above Trapezus and Pharnacia. In the name of the Macrones-Sanni, one can discern the name of the later Mingrelians-Chans (Melikishvili 1959, 79).
