Crinum calamistratum (lat. Crinum calamistratum) is a species of aquatic plant from the family Amaryllidaceae. One of the most impressive and recognizable aquarium plants, valued for its long wavy leaves.
Distribution. The natural range of Crinum calamistratum covers water bodies of West Africa, mainly in Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire and other countries. The plant is found in stagnant and slow-flowing waters — rivers, lakes, ponds, canals and swamps.
Care requirements. Crinum calamistratum is an undemanding plant. Optimal water parameters: temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–8.0, hardness 2–15 dGH. It grows well in moderate lighting but prefers bright light (from 0.5 W/L). CO2 injection is not required but accelerates growth and improves appearance. The plant prefers nutritious substrate rich in organic matter.
Planting and care. Crinum calamistratum is planted in the substrate as individual bulbs. It is important not to bury the bulb completely — it should be only slightly covered with substrate. The plant quickly takes root and begins to grow, forming a lush bush. Crinum calamistratum grows slowly, so it requires patience. With insufficient lighting, leaves become pale and growth slows down. Weekly water changes of 20% and liquid fertilizer application are recommended.
Propagation. Propagates vegetatively — through bulb offsets that form on the mother bulb. Young bulbs are separated from the mother plant and planted in the substrate. It can also reproduce by seeds, but this rarely occurs in the aquarium.
Special features and use in aquascaping. Crinum calamistratum is distinguished by long, wavy leaves that can reach 100 cm in length and 1–2 cm in width. The leaves are dark green with wavy edges. It looks great in the background, creating a beautiful green backdrop. Suitable for aquariums with large fish. Not recommended for aquariums with herbivorous fish. Ideal for tall aquariums and aquariums with large fish.
