5th century BC
Coraxi — a mountain tribe on the West Caucasian coast in the area of modern Sukhumi. Ancient Greek geographers called the Apsilae by the name Coraxi. The Coraxi were part of the Colchians and were displaced by the Abkhazians (Abasgians).
The name was used by ancient Greek authors — Hecataeus, Pseudo-Scylax (5th-4th centuries BC), and others. In Ptolemy (2nd century AD), Corax is the name of the Bzyb River, which locates the Coraxi in the western part of modern Abkhazia. The name 'Corax' is connected by some researchers with the name of the Colchians, of whom they were a part. By the time of Arrian (2nd century AD), the country of the Coraxi was already occupied by the Abkhazians.
