Red Cabomba (lat. Cabomba furcata) is a species of aquatic plant from the family Cabombaceae. One of the most beautiful and popular red aquarium plants, valued for its bright coloration and delicate structure.

Distribution. The natural range of Red Cabomba covers water bodies of Central and South America: from Mexico to Argentina, including Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and other countries. The plant is found in stagnant and slow-flowing waters — lakes, ponds, canals and swamps.

Care requirements. Red Cabomba is a plant of moderate difficulty. Optimal water parameters: temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–12 dGH. To maintain bright red coloration, very bright lighting (from 0.7 W/L) and mandatory CO₂ injection (concentration 10–20 mg/L) are required. The plant prefers nutritious substrate and regular application of liquid fertilizers, especially iron and micronutrients.

Planting and care. Red Cabomba is planted in the substrate as individual stems. The root system is very delicate, so planting should be done carefully. The plant requires regular pruning to stimulate side shoot growth and form a lush bush. With insufficient light or nutrition, the coloration fades, stems elongate, and lower leaves fall off. Weekly water changes of 20–25% are recommended.

Propagation. Propagates vegetatively — by cuttings. Simply separate the upper part of the stem 5–10 cm long and plant it in the substrate. It can also propagate through side shoots.

Special features and use in aquascaping. Red Cabomba is distinguished by very thin, pinnately dissected leaves of bright red or red-brown color. This structure gives it a delicate, openwork appearance. It looks great in contrast with green plants in the midground and background. Bright coloration appears only with sufficient lighting and proper nutrition. Requires regular monitoring of water parameters and stable conditions.
