Giant Hygro (lat. Hygrophila corymbosa var. stricta) is a variety of aquatic plant from the family Acanthaceae. A popular and undemanding aquarium plant that forms beautiful dense thickets.

Distribution. The natural range of Giant Hygro covers water bodies of Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and other countries. The plant is found in stagnant and slow-flowing waters — rivers, lakes, canals, rice paddies and swamps.

Care requirements. Giant Hygro is a very undemanding and fast-growing plant. Optimal water parameters: temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–8.0, hardness 2–15 dGH. It grows well in moderate lighting, but with bright light (from 0.5 W/L) the coloration becomes brighter, internodes shorten, and the bush becomes more compact. CO2 injection is not required but accelerates growth.

Planting and care. Giant Hygro is planted in the substrate as individual stems. It quickly takes root and begins to grow, reaching a height of 30–50 cm. The plant requires regular pruning to form a lush bush and stimulate side shoot growth. With insufficient light, stems elongate and lower leaves fall off. Weekly water changes of 20% and liquid fertilizer application are recommended to maintain bright coloration.

Propagation. Propagates vegetatively — by cuttings. Simply separate the upper part of the stem 10–15 cm long and plant it in the substrate. It can also propagate through side shoots and runners.

Special features and use in aquascaping. Giant Hygro is distinguished by narrow, elongated leaves arranged oppositely, which create dense green thickets. It looks great in the background and midground, creating a beautiful backdrop. Suitable for aquariums with any peaceful fish. Not recommended for aquariums with herbivorous fish.
