- Phoenicia and its major cities
Phoenicians — inhabitants of Phoenicia, a country on the Asia Minor coast of the Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Palestine, as well as emigrants from Phoenicia who founded numerous trading colonies. They are first mentioned by Homer. From the end of the 2nd — beginning of the 1st millennium BC, the Phoenicians engaged in maritime trade. They founded settlements throughout the Mediterranean. The consonantal alphabet of the Phoenicians was adopted and improved by the Greeks.
The haplogroups of the Phoenicians can be easily determined by their isolated colonies (modern Ibiza, Sardinia, Malta): E-V22, J1, J2, J2a1b, J2a1b1, G2a, R1a, and R1b1a. E-V22 and R1b1a are still frequently found in the Levant (Syrians, Lebanese, Druze, Jews, Palestinians).
