Madagascar Lace Plant (lat. Aponogeton madagascariensis) is a species of aquatic plant from the family Aponogetonaceae. The world-famous "lace plant" with unique perforated leaves, considered the queen of aquarium flora. However, its splendor comes at the cost of enormous effort: it is one of the most difficult plants to keep and is categorically not recommended for beginners.

Distribution and history. The plant originates from the island of Madagascar, also found in the Comoros and Mauritius, where it grows in rivers with fast currents and in stagnant waters. In the wild, the species is threatened with extinction due to mass collection for the aquarium trade and the consumption of edible tubers by the local population. In the aquarium hobby, the plant has been known since the 1950s.

Special demanding care requirements. Madagascar Lace Plant is a strict test of an aquarist's skill. Key requirements:
* **Water parameters:** Temperature 20–26°C (critical to avoid overheating above 28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 6–8 dGH. The plant does not tolerate substrate siltation and requires very clean water.
* **Lighting:** Moderate (0.4–0.7 W/L). Bright light triggers rapid algae growth on delicate leaves and may induce summer dormancy. Direct sunlight is unacceptable.
* **Substrate and planting:** The tuberous rhizome should not be fully buried — it should remain on the surface or be only slightly covered. Sand or very fine gravel is best. Nutrient-rich substrate is not recommended, as it causes brown spots on the leaves and may kill the plant. It grows well alongside other plant roots.
* **CO2 and fertilizers:** CO2 injection and regular liquid fertilizer application (especially iron) are absolutely essential. Without CO2, the plant will live off the tuber's reserves and quickly die.
* **Flow:** Unlike many other plants, Madagascar Lace Plant prefers good water flow and powerful filtration, mimicking its natural habitat.

Life cycle and dormancy. One of the main features is the summer dormancy period. During this time, it may drop almost all leaves and appear dead, but the rhizome remains alive. The plant should not be removed from the aquarium. With the onset of autumn and lower temperatures, it should resume growth. A cool winter (temperature around 20–22°C) is the key to successful cultivation.

Propagation. Vegetative propagation (by dividing the rhizome) is the only reliable method in home aquariums. Seed propagation is extremely difficult and requires manual pollination, as pollen matures before the pistils.

Use in aquascaping. Madagascar Lace Plant is a specimen plant for very large and tall aquariums. Due to its huge leaves (up to 65 cm), it is planted in the center of the composition in the midground or background. The best companions are other Aponogeton species and Cryptocorynes. Not recommended for aquariums with herbivorous fish.
